Manchester sits along the south bank of the James River, directly across from downtown Richmond and linked to it by the Lee, Mayo, and Manchester bridges. Once an independent city in its own right, Manchester merged with Richmond in 1910, becoming the first independent city in Virginia to give up its charter. A 2002 historic designation sparked the wave of redevelopment that has turned the neighborhood into one of Richmond’s fastest-growing residential markets, with converted Reynolds tobacco warehouses now housing upscale lofts and condos, Hull Street lined with restaurants and breweries like Legend, and the Floodwall River Walk giving residents direct access to Belle Isle and the James River Park System.
Manchester was originally known as Manastoh, a Native American name later anglicized to Rocky Ridge before being officially renamed Manchester in 1769. The neighborhood is home to one of Virginia’s first paved toll roads and Virginia’s first railroad, both built in the early 1800s to haul coal from Chesterfield County mines to the busy Manchester docks along the James. Manchester also briefly served as the seat of Chesterfield County from 1870 to 1876, before becoming an independent city in 1874.
